Detailed Introduction
Radio 247, also known as BBC Radio 1, was the original name used for BBC Radio 1 when it launched on 30 September 1967. The name "247" referred to its medium wave frequency, 247 metres (1214 kHz), on which it broadcast initially. The station was created to cater to a younger audience, offering pop music as a response to the popularity of pirate radio stations. It later transitioned to being more widely known simply as BBC Radio 1, dropping the "247" branding over time.
