Radio 247

Radio 247 was the original name for BBC Radio 1 when it launched on September 30, 1967, broadcasting on 247 meters (1214 kHz) on the AM (medium wave) band. It was introduced as part of the BBC's response to the popularity of pirate radio stations, offering a legal alternative focused on contemporary pop music. The station was branded as "247" for its wavelength until 1978, when the BBC reorganized its frequencies. Radio 1 eventually transitioned to FM broadcasting, leaving its "247" branding behind.
